Module 3 - Howard Rheingold: Way-New Collaboration

People do have a basic need to interact and work as a group for feedback under some

circumstances, e.g., any non-testing situations. People need a sense of purpose that can only be

acquired through interactions with other people. Someone actually wrote a song called no man is

an island. It means man cannot exist without some type of social interaction with other people.

Rheingold discussed that cooperative initiatives similar to the Wikipedia project is the next wave

for the future. Technology has enabled people in different countries and languages to

communicate by translating phrases in real time, chatting, blogging, email and using other forms

of social communication. Computer cameras enable collaboration on school projects, work

conferences and many other activities. Rheingold described how companies such as IBM, Sun

and HP have switched from proprietary software environments to open source of software for

sharing and collaborating with other companies. IBM research laboratory features Artemis and

Blue Spruce, which are tools used for heathcare analytics and real time collaboration.

  1. I do agree with you about people having that basic need to interact with people. Its in our nature and how society is. Communications is very important in order to get things done, whether ordering food at a restaurant, shopping in a store, or applying for a credit card. Technology has allowed us to enhance our performance and established ways for us to communicate better.
